Every volume of Thomas Chalmers read end to end, hunting one thing: the claim that stops a reader cold. Surprising permissions, surprising prohibitions, knife-edge distinctions, inversions, hard sayings, epigrams, exegetical surprises. Chalmers is magnificent and enormously verbose, so eloquence alone was never enough; only the contrarian claim survived. Every quotation below was checked verbatim against the printed text, and every page number comes from the running header above the passage.
Two things are deliberately left out. Nothing written before his conversion of 1810–11 appears here, and neither do the Astronomical Discourses, with one exception: his attack on mistaking religious taste for real faith, which sits inside that series but belongs with the rest of this.
